Profile

Dr. Sajid Nisar is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University of Advanced Science (KUAS), where he leads the Novel Intelligent Systems & Advanced Robotics (NISAR) Laboratory. His research centers on human-centered robotics, with a focus on the development of intelligent robotic systems that enhance human capabilities and improve productivity. His work spans the domains of mechanism design, soft robotics, haptics, surgical teleoperation, and AI-powered mobility systems.
Dr. Nisar received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Kyoto University, Japan. He holds an M.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering and Science from Kyoto University and a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Taxila, Pakistan.
Since joining KUAS, Dr. Nisar has established a lab with a global team of researchers and students. His work is supported by competitive research grants from JSPS (KAKENHI), AMED, New York Academy of Science, and industry partners. He has conducted successful research collaborations with institutions including Stanford University, A*STAR Singapore, and the San Raffaele Telethon Institute in Italy.
His research is published in journals such as IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters, and proceedings of the IEEE ICRA, IEEE/RSJ IROS and World Haptics Conference. He has been recognized with the Best Associate Editor Award at IEEE ICRA (2025), Best Researcher Award at KUAS (2023) and Best Associate Editor Award at WHC (2023).
He actively mentors undergraduate and graduate students in international competitions, industry-linked capstone projects, and advanced robotics research.
